This year, Apple has moved away from its long-time tradition of launching two iPhone models. Instead, the Cupertino company announced up to three new iPhones, including iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. While the iPhone X marks the biggest design change ever, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus include a big improvement under the hood.
However, that doesn’t make the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus a bad choice. The iPhone 8 Plus is a great device for those users who cannot stand staggering $999 price tag of the iPhone X and expect an iPhone with more power.
The iPhone 8 Plus will arrive in September this year, and if you are planning to stand in line in front of a local Apple Store on the release day, make sure you check out our review below.
Release date and pricing
At this year’s September event, Apple confirmed that the iPhone 8 Plus would be available for pre-order on September 15 and hit retail stores in select markets on September 22. According to Apple, the 64GB model will be priced at $799, while the 256GB variant will retail for $949 in the US.
If you now own an iPhone 7 Plus, there’s nothing major changing here in terms of the device’s screen. This means that we still have a 5.5-inch 1080p display with 401 ppi. However, Apple has added the company’s Retina HD technology to the device’s display, offering more details and sharper image quality.
Noticeably, Apple has finally brought the True Tone display technology to its iPhone lineup of smartphones this year. Apple’s True Tone is a great feature, as it automatically adjusts the device’s screen based on the ambient lighting in the room.
With the iPhone 8 Plus, Apple continues to use the traditional LCD display used in the previous model. However, the LCD display on the iPhone 8 Plus is now brighter and sharper, allowing users to see things better in high-light conditions.
The iPhone 8 Plus is powered by Apple’s latest A11 Bionic chip, offering more power when compared to the A10 Fusion chip found in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. A11 Bionic chip is a six-core chip that features two performance cores and four high-efficiency cores.
According to Apple, two performance cores in the iPhone 8 Plus are 25 percent faster than the A10, while four efficiency cores are 75 percent faster than the predecessor. The iPhone 8 Plus features 3GB of RAM, just like the premium iPhone X, thus offering better multitasking and stable performance.
On the back, the iPhone 8 Plus features a dual 12MP camera setup, just like the iPhone X. The primary 12MP shooter features an f/1.8 lens with Optical Image Stabilization support, while the secondary 12MP telephoto lens features an f/2.8 aperture only.
The dual cameras on the iPhone 8 Plus feature Portrait Lighting that helps adjust the lighting for better portrait shots. The iPhone 8 Plus is among the first smartphones to feature Augmented Reality, with cameras designed to overlay digital graphics in the real world.
