How to set a song as your iPhone ringtone using iTunes

Back in the old days, you could not set your favorite tracks as your iPhone ringtone, as Apple offers a wide range of default ringtones. Fortunately, we no longer live in those old days. iPhone owners now can set any song as ringtone on their iPhone, without the need for a third-party app to be installed on their device.

However, the process might be unknown to many folks. With that in mind, we believe that we can help you out. In the section below, we are going to show you how to set a song as your iPhone ringtone. Before we proceed, make sure you are now running iOS 11 or later.

  1. How to create a custom ringtone on your iPhone

To set your favorite song as iPhone ringtone, you first need to create your own ringtone from a song or music track. If you need help, you can check out our steps below.

Step 1: Connect your iPhone to a Mac or a Windows PC and then launch iTunes (make sure you now have the latest version of iTunes on your computer)

Step 2: Once you are in, click Songs from the left sidebar and you should see a list of the songs you have synced to your device. Now just simply select the song you wish to set as your iPhone ringtone

Step 3: Right-click on that song and then select Get Info from the drop-down menu. After that, make sure you select the Options tab and then enter the start and stop times

Step 4: Once you are done, hit the OK button. After that, click on Files from the Apple menu and hover the cursor over Convert

Step 5: Select Create AAC Version (to set a song as iPhone ringtone, your song has to come with .m4r extension)

Step 6: Right-click on that song, then select Show in Finder. From the iTunes folder, you should see your newly created song with .m4r extension. After that, remove the song from iTunes (make sure you hit Keep File)

Step 7: Hit Tones and then drag and drop your .m4r song file to the Tones pane. Once you are done, close iTunes and re-launch it on your computer

Step 8: Once you are done, your song will be transferred to your iPhone. After that, hit Sync to complete the task

Once you have successfully synced your newly created song to your connected iPhone, you now can set it as iPhone ringtone.

Step 1: Open the Settings app from your home screen and then hit Sound & Haptics

Step 2: Now just simply select the song you have just transferred from iTunes to set it as your default ringtone.
