How to fix connection errors in Mail for iPhone and iPad

Mail is one of the most used apps on iPhone and iPad. Apple has been working on improving its stock Mail app for years in an attempt to offer a better user experience. However, that doesn’t mean that everything works perfectly.

A number of iPhone and iPad owners have reported that they cannot send or receive email from their device. What they get is a message saying “Connection to the server failed” while trying to send and receive email. If you have been hit by the issue, we are here to help.

In this guide, we will go through the steps on how to fix connection errors in Mail for iPhone and iPad. Before moving ahead, make sure you now have the latest iOS version on your device. If you don’t, head to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available updates.

How to fix connection errors in Mail for iPhone and iPad

  1. Force quit Mail on your device

If you are now running the latest version of iOS, but the problem still persists, try force quitting the Mail app on your device and then re-launch. Here is how.

Step one: First off, if you now own an iPhone X, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and then pause until you enter the App Switcher

Step two: Now just simply tap and hold the Mail app and then hit the Delete button.

If nothing changes, reboot your device…..

Step one: Press and release the Volume Up button. After that, press and release the Volume Down button

Step two: Press and hold the Side button. Keep holding the buttons until you see the Apple logo.

  1. Make sure you are now still connected to internet

If the problem is still present, there is a good chance that you don’t have a stable internet connection. You can follow the steps below to check if you now have an active internet connection.

Step one: Launch the Settings app from your home screen and then turn off Airplane mode

Step two: Scroll down a little bit and hit Cellular

Step three: Now just simply turn on the switch for Cellular.

  1. Remove the account and re-add it

If none of the above-mentioned solutions work for you, it’s a good idea to remove the problem account and re-add. Here is how.

Step one: Launch Settings on your iPhone or iPad and then hit Accounts & Passwords

Step two: Select the problem account and then hit Delete Account twice

Step three: Once you are done, hit Add Account and select the email service you wish to add

Step four: Follow the instructions to re-add your account.
